What is the name of your boat and what’s the story behind it?

I am building a 15 foot sailboat and we have named it WillowBay. I have been “building” it for years… that’s another story. My daughter is almost 19 now, but when she was in grade school, my wife, son, daughter and I went to lunch this particular day. The kids were telling us about the kids in their classes. They were not happy that the other kids would not obey the teachers. My daughter said, “But Daddy, you know we’ll obey.” I liked that. Will Obey, but I heard WillowBay. It sounds nautical, yet it makes a statement about our family’s daily quest to do our best to obey God.

I carved the name plate, maybe I’ll post a pic sometime.

  • These are names I like; Nickle Pride, OnTop, Sailon, WaviDavi, sunrIse, Morning Glory, – just names I like.

We are life long nudist and when we can we discretely navigate without our Clothes. When we got our last boat a Signature 24 Chaparrel, we named her “TanFannySee”.

  • There is always a story in every name.

I had a dinghy once which I named, “Pain in the Aft”. After a few years of trying ALL of the advice that’s out there on the subject of towing a ****, I made room on the fore deck and lashed it down there. Kept the name–it was a good conversation starter.

Goodness aren’t we touchy about language!! I’ve had two perfectly good words censored in two days. Who does this stuff–a machine?
I”m an author and pretty well know the English language and its use-polite and other wise. Not all four letter words are “bad”.
A four letter word that is short for dinghy is very common usage in boating circles.
By the way–’boaters’ is not. A boater is a HAT.

Our boats are named S/V Thunder, S/V Euroclydon and F/V Sundown.

Here are 2 boat names no one else in Alaska should name there boat
Encore and Indian Summer there are way to many named that already.

    Tim,

Unfortunately, all is “PC” today, ESPECIALLY on sites such as this. Fortunately, I feel that the PFTS moderators are pretty much on the ball and not overly enthusiastic about censorship. (And, have no doubt about it: it IS censorship, a true abomination.) I belong to several camping forums, and the moderators for those sites seem functionally illiterate, though they pride themselves on their “ability” to use English. We’ve got some sharp people, here, thank God! I’m a one-time English teacher, and a published author, and I agree with you; there’s words, and there’s words….

Our boat’s name is Cada Dia Mas (each day more), which pretty much is self-explainatory if you are a boater. I did want to add a story about one of the more interesting names we have seen in our travels. In San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico is a boat named “S.O.M.F.”–any guesses? It isn’t what you will probably think of first!

Our Macgregor 26X was named in remembrance of an Aunt of the previous owner. Mahalo Rose,
We didn’t know anyone named Rose so we changed it to Mahalo Akua (Hawaiian) for “Thank You God”
We heard so many stories about all the ceremonies to change a boats name. We did about everything except kill a cat.. We even had our 5 yr old pee off the bow.. Fun Stuff.
I was juggling the idea of naming our sloop. (Miss’N'Mizzen)
