I have a Blackberry and also wonder if there are any GPS related apps out there that will show marine related charts and data. I have heard there is charting software for the iPhone and/or iPod. I
am now thinking of going to an Android phone where my question continues… is there an app that will work for boating navigation? (This is what I would consider most needed use for a marine app)

I’ve just started using an iPhone4 and am still in the process of trying different apps for tide and navigation. I’m not sure if you want app info on the Blackberry or the Androis phones, but a good place to start is ActiveCaptain.com Jeff Siegel has tested a lot of different phones and apps.

  • Marine Weather by bluefin is excellent on Droid X. This uses the marine weather stations and you pick the station you want. Everyday weather I like Weather Bug for Droid X. Works excellent even has video feed for today’s weather.

Ditto on Harry’s post above – check the Active Captain website – there is a charting GPS app for windows & they are working on the android and blackberry platforms.

  • David I really like my Droid X and I do not have a iphone to compare with. A friend has one but our sailing lines don’t cross to often these days. Another Captain friend has Ipad and I am waiting until the next upgrade to get that. His Ipad is fantastic, fast and the larger screen is wonderful. Aug the android will come out with Quad Core and will stream video to a 32 HDTV. I would like to wait until the Ipad comes out with quad core. That should be out o site.

Back to the Ipad now, Bill runs his wind, tides, sun& Moon, and digit navigation charts from the one terminal plus all e-mail to grew and clients. OOPS and gps with 3d view for roadways so no surprises when go there for the first time. As we viewed 60 highway, it shown a skid mark from a car on the double yellow line. I run a free GPS for the waterways and it work fine in Droid X but I am sure that a little coin will improve the quality a great deal. My boat has a nice GPS already so I only use the Droid X as a backup. Droids use a lot of power. It’s no problem, I just care my cords with me.

I too am on the Droid X and love it. While it is a good back up, there are some great apps available.

I use GPS Essentials a good bit. It’s not a general marine navigation product, but has tons of amazing GPS data. (Free is also good) http://goo.gl/RxyIg

Navionics has their great charts/apps available for the android platform. Nice thing is that the charts are stored on the phone and you don’t need cell service to access them. They are worth the price: http://www.navionics.com/MobileMarineFeatures.asp?MobileType=Android

    Marine Weather by Bluefin: http://goo.gl/Xbd4h

    Google Sky Maps: http://goo.gl/ryhaV

OBX Fishing is free and has a ton of great info: http://goo.gl/V32Bg

Used daily is WeatherBug Elite. Worth every penny: http://goo.gl/YHnsH

    @Captwaypoint

    Great apps!
Moon 3D is similar to Moon Phase. http://goo.gl/Y8phq

I concur on Tideapp…. that was one of the first apps I installed.

    The Marine Compass is excellent!

Until I actually go somewhere, I have absolutely no use for Marine Traffic or Marine Debris Tracker, but they are so cool, I’ve just installed them both anyway.

    Thanks for the good tips!
