Is it acceptable to enter foreign waters and then buy a courtesy flag after clearing customs & immigration rather than arrive flying the courtesy flag?

    • James ,
New to this site but have sailed from U.S. to Canada several times. My understanding is that you dont hoist courtesy flag until after clearing customs and it can fly until you are once again cleard home or another country.

    • James,
As soon as you arrive in foreign water, you should raise a ” Q” flag to let customs know that your vessel is healthy and that you would like to clear customs. Once you clear customs, you should have a courtesy flag onboard and replace the ”Q” flag with the courtsey flag. Have a great trip! linda
