Regatta Begins European Olympic Sailing Season

Palma de Mallorca, Spain (March 27, 2013) – Following the 2016 Olympic Quadrennium racing season debut at ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami, in January, the international fleet is in Palma de Mallorca, Spain for the next event of the series. From April 1-6, a group of American sailors, including members of the US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider and US Sailing Development Team, will compete in ISAF Sailing World Cup Palma against over 850 sailors from 53 countries. Photos, video interviews and reports from the racecourse will be posted on US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider website, and posted on Facebook and Twitter channels.

“Now that we are in the early days of the Rio 2016 Olympic Quad, an event like Sailing World Cup Palma is a good opportunity for U.S. sailors to gain high-level racing experience in the international fleet while working on new techniques, equipment, and, in some cases, teams,” said Josh Adams, Managing Director of U.S. Olympic Sailing (Essex, Mass.).“For the sailors who have committed to sailing in Europe, this regatta is a starting off point for additional events through the spring and summer.” Read the rest of this entry →

New to the Nacra Class

March 22, 2013 in Team Sperry Blog

Well there we go, it appears this winter’s training is over and done with already! It has been an exciting winter for me. Changing class into the mixed multihull Nacra 17 class after the London Olympics has presented a completely new challenge and new skills to learn within sailing. It has been really refreshing being able to jump into a new class in this this first year of the Rio cycle and also to have been sailing with a new partner, Tom Phipps. The partnership has been going really well and we are both looking forward to going racing now.

In the first week of April we will race our first event of the year, first event in the Nacra, first event together and my first big fleet race for a long time! I am slightly apprehensive about going racing. You never really know, especially in the first year, how your winter training has been going. We feel like we have made great progress and are sailing the boats pretty well, but the racing in Palma at the Princess Sofia World Cup Regatta will certainly be the true test! We are expecting around 40 boats and the boats are loads of fun so I am expecting good things from the racing. After the event we will stay in Palma for a week training working on various aspects we pick out from the week before, then we will be headed to Hyeres for our second World Cup of the year. It’s going to be a busy and testing month ahead….can’t wait! Read the rest of this entry →

A Big Win at ISAF World Cup Miami

February 20, 2013 in Team Sperry Blog

The Miami Olympic Class Regatta has been a regular event on my schedule for years. Graham Biehl and I have sailed this event eight years in a row and had a great time together. This year, I teamed up with Dave Hughes and put in some preparation with coach Morgan Reeser. While I feel experienced in the class – sailing two Olympic games – I am always surprised at how much I don’t know. Sailing with Dave and Morgan helped open me up to some areas I had not explored before.

The event turned out to be mostly medium wind, with one heavy air day and one light wind day. The fleet was smaller than it has been in years, but the men sailed combined with the women and were scored together, so we had close races in all conditions. Read the rest of this entry →

Carlos Aguilar Match Race Win

December 17, 2012 in Team Sperry Blog

We have just returned from a sunny successful trip to St Thomas, USVI. It was a grade 2 open match race event called the Carlos Aguilar Match Race, named in memory of Carlos, an extremely avid sailor and supporter of match racing in the virgin islands. Down there we sail IC24’s which are converted J24’s. they cut the J24 deck off and made them a lot more comfortable to sail and improve the deck space which makes them a joy to match race.

We completed a double round robin ranking us 2nd in the group just behind former America’s cup skipper Peter Holmberg.  This lead us to race head to head with another former America’s cup helmsman Dave Dellenbaugh for the semi finals. We found ourselves down 1-2 in a first to 3 point series and in a desperate need of bouncing back, we re-strategized and determined we needed to be slightly more aggressive and precise during our pre-starts. These game plan changes lead us to two more race victories and a spot in the finals. Dave Perry, our former Olympic campaign coach, also earned a spot in the finals knocking out Holmberg. We sailed smart, smooth and fast during the finals and won the event with a 3-0 score against Dave Perry.  Read the rest of this entry →
