Variety is…

December 17, 2012 in Team Sperry Blog

As I’m writing this, I’m looking out at a beautiful but freezing Weymouth wondering if I can muster the will power to go out sailing.

I’ve just got back from Florida where I enjoyed probably the best days’ of racing I’ve done all year at the Melges 32 Gold Cup event in Fort Lauderdale. The actual event was a bit of an end-of-season ‘fun’ regatta, if there is ever such a thing. I was sailing on a new boat, Warpath, filling in for Morgan Larson, who was off doing the Extreme 40s.

But the sailing was immense; 20 knots onshore every day, enormous waves, 25 degrees, sailing in t-shirts.  It was perfect conditions and the downwinds were awesome. Read the rest of this entry →

Switching Things Up for the 2016 Games

December 17, 2012 in Team Sperry Blog

Since the Games, Team Stock Moore has been enjoying some much needed time off from the hustle of campaigning.  Erik has been stationed in his new home just outside of New York City, spending time with his family and girlfriend.  Typical of most featured Olympians, the first year following the games can be a life-search for what lies next.  For Erik that search continues. As for myself I can say the Olympic bug is still very much alive within me. Being subject to the Olympic experience has only strengthened my desire to walk away with an Olympic medal.

Pursuing perfection and striving for gold comes with its costs.  During the Olympics I was forced to sail through a shoulder injury which has finally been surgically repaired. It’s been just over a month since surgery, and rehab is going extremely well. Just prior to surgery, Dave Hughes, our Olympic coach and I participated in a Sperry Top-Sider photo shoot in Miami. We couldn’t have asked for better weather and better group to work with. I think we really came away with some great shots which we’re eager to see. Read the rest of this entry →

A Busy and Exciting End to 2012

Dear all!

As always, time is flying by! The end of 2012 is coming closer and lots has happened the past couple of weeks. I have to say… My life is busier then ever!! My days are filled with lessons, practical exercises (two days ago I caused a small fire in the lab, gym sessions, and lots of fun things of course.

On November 14th I went to the METS tradeshow in Amsterdam. I was there for Sperry Topsider!! Great fun really J J Sperry had one of the best booths at METS and I had a great time being there, signing cards and taking pictures with my medal. Below I’m with Harry-Michel Peeters, the Sperry agent for Belgium and Luxemburg. Read the rest of this entry →

A Presidential Visit to Cap it All Off

September 17, 2012 in Team Sperry Blog

We’ve been asked over and over; how was it? How are we supposed to share the emotions of competing for one’s country? Of being in a group with some of the greatest athletes in the world. Of being a teammate of the greatest Olympian ever to compete. The short answer is that it was an amazing experience. The long answer is far too involved to get into here. We added perhaps the final chapter last week with a Team USA visit to the White House!

A Final Word Before the Action Starts

July 18, 2012 in Team Sperry Blog

It was amazing seeing Weymouth brave the really horrible weather and come up out massively to support the Olympic Torch on Thursday.

I have to admit that I ended up watching the whole thing through binoculars from the balcony of our team accommodation at Portland, with the local news on in the background as I’d been on a strict rest day and had spent the afternoon chilling out watching the Tour de France. But after seeing it all unfold in the distance, I actually wish I’d got all my offshore gear on and made the effort to get amongst it all because it looked really impressive.

There were so many people at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and on the beach and absolutely fair play to them because the weather was awful! I think that just reflects how much excitement has built up around the Torch Relay and the fact that the Olympics are going to be here very soon. Read the rest of this entry →
