Well there we go, it appears this winter’s training is over and done with already! It has been an exciting winter for me. Changing class into the mixed multihull Nacra 17 class after the London Olympics has presented a completely new challenge and new skills to learn within sailing. It has been really refreshing being able to jump into a new class in this this first year of the Rio cycle and also to have been sailing with a new partner, Tom Phipps. The partnership has been going really well and we are both looking forward to going racing now.
In the first week of April we will race our first event of the year, first event in the Nacra, first event together and my first big fleet race for a long time! I am slightly apprehensive about going racing. You never really know, especially in the first year, how your winter training has been going. We feel like we have made great progress and are sailing the boats pretty well, but the racing in Palma at the Princess Sofia World Cup Regatta will certainly be the true test! We are expecting around 40 boats and the boats are loads of fun so I am expecting good things from the racing. After the event we will stay in Palma for a week training working on various aspects we pick out from the week before, then we will be headed to Hyeres for our second World Cup of the year. It’s going to be a busy and testing month ahead….can’t wait! Read the rest of this entry →

We have been out in Murcia enjoying the sun for our winter training, but in a different boat. I have started a new challenge in the 49er FX, which has been a little different to what I am used to. The FX is very quick compared to the Elliott 6m and just to add to the challenge, I am now steering. There has been plenty of swimming which is a bit of a shock to the system!
Within the FX squad we have been doing a rotation system which has been a good opportunity to learn different skills from each other. It has been a full on few months with a lot of on the water time along with our on shore fitness programs. We have got our first event in Palma at the Princess Sofia regatta at the beginning of April, with a small warm up event a few weeks before. I can’t wait to try out the skiff racing. April started off with a bit of a bump for the Match Race girls. We were training in windy Cadiz with fellow Sperry team mates Sally, EK and Alana, we had a bit of a windy week with a few of the days called off with gusts of 40 knots. Luckily it was still sunny! On our last day of training seemed a little lighter to the previous days but still probably averaging around the mid 20’s with big gusts. We managed to capsize the Elliott, yes a keelboat… We were doing a training race, heading down to the finish and all of a sudden we nose dived resulting in a bang on the head and a trip to hospital for Lucy from hitting her head whilst under water. The bump of the head resulted in 10 staples in Lucy’s head, luckily she’s all good now.
